Went to Antwerp at the weekend...

With *deep breath* [livejournal.com profile] stevek, [livejournal.com profile] morbidfrog. [livejournal.com profile] simonsatori, [livejournal.com profile] rosenkavalier, [livejournal.com profile] vampyresheep, Rob-with-no-technology, [livejournal.com profile] fracture242, SoulStealer, R, Lady Amaranth, T, S, E and er...

Well there were a lot of us. I've probably forgotten someone. Apologies, I have (naturally) returned with a fuzzy-head inducing cold, but then it was -7!

Anyways, some pics of Antwerp.

Well that's probably enough for now, next up, photos from the ball, though I might wait a little for other pics to come in on that, see if I can steal anyone else's good images!

Lovely pics!
How disappointing that the spouty hand doesn't look like it's spouty-ing. Presumably on account of the -7!

Nothing was spouting in that weather - except possibly my nose.

no unfortunately the spouty hand doesn't spout. Not sure if it did at one point but there has been nothing coming from it the 3 years we've been there.

Oh, my life. I think Antwerp is actually where I should be living! Amazing! I also love the illuminated text and the margin pictures - I did a module on medieval printing: it's fascinating stuff (in a geeky way). Looks as though you had loads of fun x

medieval printing.

Ah, then you must go to the printing museum, it has a whole press and everything...

The pubs are rather fab too... there's an INSANE bar (http://www.cafebeveren.info/) with a giant coin operated mechanical organ in it...

And so much delicious beer! Dangerous to live there though, I'd get so fat from all the beer and waffles.

(Where has the snow gone?)

I love Antwerp, I could happily live there.

That printing museum is beautiful, no?

I was a bit grumpy as they wouldn't accept my student card for student discount, and the ticket was pricey. But I cheered up once we got inside, it's not just the exhibits, but the entire building is a treasure.

Well, none for me obviously. We didn't get any snaps of the scantily-clad ladies in their windows. Last time I tried that (in Amsterdam) I got yelled at. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/motodraconis/2524891638/sizes/o/in/set-72157605265737033/)

GAH! That's a ridiculous temperature for Blighty. Most unenglish!

Well, it was -7 minimum, probably more with wind chill. At points I felt as if my face was being rasped off.

Ohhh, it looks really nice. I was supposed to go there on that cruise, but because of the wild weather we ended up in Bruges instead.Damn. I've really got to check it out sometime.
What's with the Madonna?saint? in the pub? and the couple studying the giant's crotch?

I dunno, Bruges is pretty lovely, probably better than Antwerp visually, unless you'd already seen it already and wanted a change (or a red light district.)

It was a bar full of religious statues, but alas, I am no good at identifying such things, having been raised Methodist/Atheist, I'll have to rely on your identification skills! As for the giant statue, that's Lange Wapper (http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=35465)

Ha, me too, or at least Methodist and I became atheist. My Christian boyfriend comes in useful when looking at this sort of thing; he knows his winged lion of St. Mark from his rood screen and suchlike. (His first guess was Mary, clues being the crown (Queen of Heaven) the white (virginal) dress with a kingly robe over it, the roses on part of the robe because that's her flower, and the loaf in her hand, is because the feast of Assumption, the day she ascended to Heaven, is in August so has sort of harvesty associations. However, further research suggests it's actually Elizabeth of Hungary, who had a miracle involving roses and bread.)

Woah! Well triangulated! I'd never have known where to start.

Date: 2012-02-13 11:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crazycrone.livejournal.com
Aha! I reckoned it wsn't Mary as her robe is usually blue, and she often has her Sacred Heart stickin' out.

Date: 2012-02-13 11:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crazycrone.livejournal.com
No,I don't think she's Mary, but I don't know who she is.
I had been to Bruges before, and yes, I like it a lot, but I was curious to have a look at Antwerp, and it does seem lovely.
Thanks for the link on Lange Wapper (snigger-) Another character I'd never heard of.
Edit: Elizabeth of Hungary, eh?

Well, yes. and that's also good. Everybody knows what's going on and if they don't like it, they can avoid the area.

your photos have come out so well! Mine are rather disappointingly blue-grey overall.

There might be a smidge of post processing on them, but not much!
A lot of my ball pics came out a bit shakey, not sure if I had it on an odd setting or just the low light levels. *Grumble* Then again, I did use the smaller portable camera for the ball.

Lol, I bet! =p It's sad how books just aren't as elegant and intricate nowadays!
