Professor John Ashton. The Professor who called it right on Coronavirus gives a dire warning to the British public.

Not a Brexit related video, but just a small observation. When it comes to people's lives versus the economy... the economy is more important. People must die to save the economy.

Yet when it comes to Brexit versus the economy... Brexit is more important. The economy must die to save Brexit.

For. Fucks. Sake.

From the FT (The Financial Times) which is generally pretty factual.

Here's something I have been discussing with my students, which I would like to share.

The Buddy System.* You agree with another student to be their buddy and vice versa. It's a contract. You keep an eye on this person, and they do the same to you. Ideally they are someone you see online regularly, like a study partner. If you see your buddy starting to slump, with depression, stress or anxiety, you give them a nudge. "Hey mate, you're not yourself, you need to speak to the doc" "Hey mate, I know I'm nagging, but seriously..."
Your buddy does the same to you. If you are slumping, they get to prod you.
I don't think any depressed person likes to be nagged to see the doc, but these are special times. That's why you make the contract beforehand. "We agree to mutually nag if necessary. We'll try and ring the doc if we get nagged." Set the ground rules now.

I've suggested this because not all my students have good relationships with their families, and even if they did, they'd probably hide how bad they were from their families. Some are living alone and may be spending weeks without any face to face human interaction beyond trying to stand 2m away from a checkout person. I am genuinely more worried about a student losing their life from depression than covid at this time. It might not be a brilliant solution, but it's better than nothing and the students have reacted positively to this suggestion.

So if you think this might work for you, even if you are not a student, maybe consider getting a buddy of your own.

Soss and his new friend.

* In scuba diving, you never dive alone, as it can be very dangerous. Instead, you should have a diving "buddy" who you dive with each time. The buddy looks out for you, and you look out for them. Diving with a buddy saves lives.

OK, so with one chum in lockdown, I thought I'd put together some webcomic links. For you, and anyone else who might end up in a lockdown.

Why webcomics? Why not books? Books are great, but comics are often underrated. Personally, I rarely have time any more to read proper books. I mean, I read, all my sodding time is taken up reading sodding journals for work. So if you are busy, busy too, a webcomic can give a bit of instant respite, a mental shot to the arm, a break. Great stories, great art, free to read now, what's not to love?

Here are some of my recommendations, if you have more, please comment with their links. And persevere beyond the first chapter. The first chapter, like the first act of an opera, is setting the scene. Introducing the characters, the world, keep going. Suddenly, you're hooked!

Unsounded. This is an epic tale. That first chapter may start cute, but it gets pretty intense, with dark but important themes. Be surprised. This intricate plot is interweaving, pick up the threads, something big is coming!

Unsounded.

A complete comic... Digger has an amazing main character, unlike what you would normally expect, and I'm not just saying that because the main character is a wombat. Full of humour too.

Digger.

A bunch of kids in a magical competition, so usual, so cheesy. But such a range of characters. Again, plots are interweaving here, the competition fades, the characters will surprise you. Dig deeper. Trans characters, they, he and she. Roll with it.

Never Satisfied.

A new disease spreads rapidly across countries, soon everyone is infected (gah, sounds a bit familiar?) Only the Nordics, cut off far north retain small pockets of people not infected. A Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish taskforce is assembled. Is anyone still alive in the South?

Stand Still Stay Silent.

By the same author, but aimed more at children.

A Redtail's Dream.

Nothing is going to stand between Ludovica and her sea sponges! An audacious plan... FOR SCIENCE AND THE OPEN SEAS!

Tiger Tiger.

A partially animated comic, outsiders caught between worlds, dragged back. A mystery.

Feral Gentry.

OMG! I forgot to add Oglaf! Not safe for work and very funny.

Oglaf.

Belzebubs, trve kvlt Black Metal hilarity (yes this is a thing). (Scroll down for samples.)

Belzebubs.

I'm not a big fan of DC stuff myself, but freebies are freebies... a 400 page download of Judge Dredd (and other free comics.)

Judge Dredd.

A couple of tasty looking tip offs from LJ user Drak...

Kill Six Billion Demons is beautiful, well scripted and awesomely imaginative: Six Billion Demons.

Gunnerkrigg Court is an interesting take on magic an technology side by side and has a lovely antagonist in Coyote (not quite that Coyote, but close): Gunnerkrigg Court.

Both enough of an archive to survive even the most dedicated binge reader. GC goes through quite an artistic journey, so the early stuff and the recent are hugely different, but the characters survive the transition well..
