Impossible to work while the Alarm Bods are drilling and clomping (and setting off the alarm!) Luckily, I'm on schedule in spite of all the upheavals of the past couple of days. In the meantime, have some Ohrid, it's painfully cute, both Lake Ohrid and the Old Town itself are UNESCO sites of natural and cultural heritage.

It has a Castle onna crag.

Old City fortifications

A Roman Amphitheatre!

A pretty church

Another pretty church

And another...

Allegedly, Ohrid once had 365 churches, one for every day of the year. Most have now vanished, which might be a relief for the sort of tourist who's "gotta catch 'em all." (Not me at least.)
Compulsory Cat.

Old city streets, not for the dodgy of knee... steps and slopes and inclines. Narrow streets.

"Lake Ohrid is a superlative natural phenomenon, providing refuge for numerous endemic and relict freshwater species of flora and fauna dating from the tertiary period. As a deep and ancient lake of tectonic origin, Lake Ohrid has existed continuously for approximately two to three million years. Its oligotrophic waters conserve over 200 species of plants and animals unique to the lake, including algae, turbellarian flatworms, snails, crustaceans and 17 endemic species of fish including two species of trout, as well as a rich birdlife."

Lakeside walk,

Please obey all signs...

Sveti Naum monastery, home of the dangerous peacocks.

Holy springs

Holy socks in the gift shop

Back on the lakefront of Ohrid, it's a happening place!

Mass baptism in the Lake event? There were at least 2 posters like this, one on either side of the Prodigy poster.

Naked crucifix dude, natch.

I can recommend it as a lovely place for a cheap, chill out holiday. You can swim in the Lake practically anywhere you like. The only downside was the distressing lack of any local Macedonian food to be had. The restaurants seemed to be all burgers 'n' chips 'n' pizza, which was a bit of a disappointment for me.
