Been working fiendishly hard, and missing my opera rehearsals, but did manage to take a break to see Gabriel with chums at the Globe Theatre.

My goodness! What a gem. I really loved this, it had all elements I love...so a mini-picture-review to remember this by.

Gorgeous, gorgeous music from Purcell and Handel, including some stunning trumpeting from Alison Balsom (pictured above)

...lots of singing, reminiscent to me of an operetta, and being a vulgar cove, I do have a lil' weakness for operetta.

Superb costumes...

The interesting and touching vignette of "bullfinch-throated" Arabella Hunt and her doomed marriage to Amy Poulter.

And last but not least, loads of vulgarity, swearing, cock-jokes, fart-jokes...so much in fact, that one reviewer recounts how he was stood next to an American couple who tutted in horror throughout the first act, before leaving in disgust at the interval. Fools! They missed a real treat.

There's even a bit of comedy nudity...

So you could say, this operetta/play really hit my level. Hur.

I would be VERY interested in any further exposure to Purcell. [livejournal.com profile] artnouveauho perhaps you can help me out here? In the meantime, there is Handel's Rodelinda at the ENO next year to look forward to.
